# Sell an API with radius-sdk

> Monetize an API or web content on Radius with radius-sdk. Use when the user wants to charge for HTTP endpoints, articles or pages, add per-request payments or a paywall, gate routes behind HTTP 402, charge AI crawlers and agents while readers stay free (publisher, CMS site, pay-per-crawl), accept x402 or MPP payments, or sell access in a TypeScript app on Hono, Express, Next.js (middleware, proxy or route handlers), Astro (middleware), a Cloudflare Worker, Fastly Compute service or Hono proxy on Node in front of an origin, Bun, Deno or Node. Covers framework detection, install, configuration (network, price, recipient, facilitator, settlement order, MPP), who pays and who reads free, CDN caching, local runs, verification with radius-cli sell check, known SDK gotchas, and the hand-off to a deployment skill.

**Progressive disclosure:** This file is the expanded reference (all 7 skill modules concatenated). For the entry-point used by agent skill loading, see [`SKILL.md`](https://github.com/radiustechsystems/tools/blob/main/plugins/radius/skills/sell-api/SKILL.md) in the plugin repository. Agents load `SKILL.md` at activation and read referenced modules on demand.

## Sell an API with radius-sdk

### What this Skill is for

Use this Skill when the user wants to **get paid** for HTTP requests:

- Charge per request for an endpoint ("monetize my API", "add a paywall", "make this route cost $0.01")
- Charge AI crawlers and agents for articles or pages on a publisher or CMS site, keeping human readers free ("pay-per-crawl", "charge GPTBot", "gate my articles")
- Add x402 payment gating (HTTP 402 + `PAYMENT-REQUIRED`) or MPP (`WWW-Authenticate: Payment`) to a TypeScript app
- Accept Radius SBC, optionally Base USDC, through a facilitator
- Check or debug a seller's 402 before deploying it

**Not this Skill:** to **pay** for a paid endpoint (agent or app buyer, `radius-cli wallet pay`, `createRadiusFetch`) or for protocol and signing internals, use the **x402** skill. For wallets, chain config and contracts, use **radius-dev**. For testnet tokens, use **dripping-faucet**. For hosting, use the platform's deployment skill after the endpoint is verified (step 6).

### Defaults (opinionated)

- **Use `radius-sdk` (0.5.0 or later).** Never hand-build `PAYMENT-REQUIRED`, verify signatures, or call a facilitator's `/verify` and `/settle` yourself. The SDK does all of it; only the wrapper differs per framework.
- **Name the network.** `network: 'testnet'` (Radius testnet, chain 72344) until the user asks for mainnet. Omitting `network` means **Radius mainnet**.
- **Price in USD strings**: `'$0.001'` is 1000 atomic units of SBC (6 decimals). Use `{ amount: '1000' }` only for atomic prices.
- **Recipient from configuration**: `payTo: process.env.PAY_TO` (or `c.env.PAY_TO` on Workers), never a literal in code the user will deploy.
- **Keep `settle: 'before'`** (the default): the handler runs only for money already received, and the receipt is in hand.
- **Default facilitator** on Radius (the SDK picks the Radius facilitator for the network). Pass `facilitator: { url }` only when the user names one or the network has no default (Base mainnet).

### Operating procedure

#### 1. Detect the framework

Read `package.json` (and the entry file) and pick the wrapper. Details and full examples: [frameworks.md](references/frameworks.md). For a site that sells articles or pages, also read [publishers.md](references/publishers.md) before writing code.

| The project uses | Seller API | Install | MPP |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Hono (incl. on Workers, Bun, Node via `@hono/node-server`) | `radiusPayments` from `radius-sdk/hono`, as `app.use(...)` | `radius-sdk hono` | yes |
| No framework: Workers `fetch`, Bun/Deno `serve`, Node 22 `Request`/`Response`, SvelteKit / Remix route handlers, Next.js / Astro API routes | `radiusPayments` from `radius-sdk/server`: `pay.wrap(handler)` or `pay(request, handler)` | `radius-sdk` | yes |
| Next.js pages or articles (`middleware.ts` on Next 15, `proxy.ts` on Next 16; edge or Node runtime) | `radiusPayments` in the middleware: `pay(publicRequest(req), () => NextResponse.next())` | `radius-sdk` | yes |
| Astro with a server adapter (`astro.config.*` with `output: 'server'` or an adapter) | `radiusPayments` in `src/middleware.ts`, **with the prerender guard**. Prerendered pages are not gated | `radius-sdk` | yes |
| A CMS or site you cannot change, behind Cloudflare (`wrangler.toml`) | A Worker in front of the origin: `pay(request, () => fetch(origin))` | `radius-sdk` | yes |
| An origin you cannot change (any language), without Cloudflare | A Hono proxy on Node in front of it: gated routes, `app.all('/*')` passes the rest through | `radius-sdk hono @hono/node-server` | yes |
| Fastly Compute (`fastly.toml`) | The same, with an `AbortSignal` shim (hand-tested only). Fastly VCL-only services cannot run it: gate in the origin framework | `radius-sdk` | yes |
| Express | `createRadiusServer` from `radius-sdk/server` + `paymentMiddleware` from `@x402/express` | `radius-sdk @x402/express express` | no |
| Next.js 16.2.6 or later, x402 only | `createRadiusServer` + `@x402/next` (**not covered by this repo's tests**; on Next 15 it cannot be used) | `radius-sdk @x402/next` | no |
| Anything else | Ask, or put a web-standard handler in front (`radius-sdk/server`) | | |

Content sites: the gate must run before any CDN cache, and charge only pages that exist ([publishers.md](references/publishers.md)). Decide who pays: every request that matches a route, or only agents (a condition wrapper, section 2 there).

#### 2. Install

Use the project's package manager (`pnpm add`, `npm install`, …) with the packages from the table. The seller entry points do not need `viem` at runtime. If you cannot install packages, use only what `package.json` already lists.

#### 3. Configure

One route table, the same on every wrapper (Hono shown):

```typescript
import { Hono } from 'hono';
import { radiusPayments, type RadiusPaymentVariables } from 'radius-sdk/hono';
const app = new Hono<{ Variables: RadiusPaymentVariables }>();
app.get('/health', (c) => c.json({ ok: true }));       // free: not in routes
app.use(radiusPayments({
  network: 'testnet',
  payTo: process.env.PAY_TO as `0x${string}`,
  facilitator: process.env.RADIUS_FACILITATOR_URL ? { url: process.env.RADIUS_FACILITATOR_URL } : undefined,
  routes: {
    'GET /api/report': { price: '$0.001', description: 'Quarterly report', mimeType: 'application/json' },
    'HEAD /api/report': '$0.001',                         // see gotchas: HEAD runs GET handlers
  },
}));
app.get('/api/report', (c) => c.json({ report: 'quarterly-sales', paidBy: c.get('radiusPayment')?.payer }));
```

- Examples are TypeScript. In plain JavaScript drop the `type` imports, generics and `as` casts; the runtime API is the same. `RadiusPaymentVariables` is a type-only export that types `c.get('radiusPayment')`.
- **Register the payment middleware before the paid handlers.** A handler registered first answers before the middleware runs and is served free (Express and Hono).
- Route keys are `"METHOD /path"` with `*` and `:param`; the first matching key wins, so list specific routes before wildcards.
- Dynamic `price` / `payTo` are functions of the request (`Request`, Hono context, or x402 context on Express).
- `mpp: { secretKey: process.env.MPP_SECRET_KEY }` (32+ random characters, the same on every instance) also accepts MPP on `radiusPayments`/Hono. See [protocols.md](references/protocols.md).
- Networks, facilitators, API keys, Base: [networks-facilitators.md](references/networks-facilitators.md). Settlement order, `onSettled`, paid errors, replays: [settlement.md](references/settlement.md).
- Charging only agents, subscribers and paywalls, CDN cache rules, discovery: [publishers.md](references/publishers.md).

#### 4. Run locally

Start the app the way the project does (`pnpm dev`, `wrangler dev`, `node server.ts`). Then:

```bash
curl -i http://127.0.0.1:3000/api/report      # expect 402, PAYMENT-REQUIRED, Cache-Control: no-store
curl -i http://127.0.0.1:3000/health          # free routes stay 200
```

Check every route that must stay free the same way: discovery (`/.well-known/*`), auth (`/token`), health. None may answer 402; `sell check` audits paid routes only.

#### 5. Verify with `radius-cli sell check`

```bash
npx radius-cli sell check http://127.0.0.1:3000/api/report --price '$0.001' --probe-head
npx radius-cli --json sell check http://127.0.0.1:3000/api/report --price '$0.001'   # for agents
```

It requests the route without paying, decodes the x402 challenge and any MPP challenge with the SDK, and checks: the 402 itself, network known, asset and EIP-712 domain of that network, amount (against `--price`, which catches decimals mistakes), `payTo`, `resource.url` bound to the requested URL, `maxTimeoutSeconds`, that the facilitator's `/supported` lists each offer's scheme, network and transfer method, and that a radius-sdk buyer would select the offer. Exit 0 means no check failed. Pass `--facilitator <url>` when the seller uses a non-default facilitator; `--probe-head` warns when an unpaid HEAD is served. Fix every `FAIL` before deploying.

`sell check` ships in `radius-cli` 0.5.0. If `radius-cli sell --help` fails, fall back to `curl -i` and decode the header (a GET, not `curl -I`: HEAD can bypass the route): `curl -s -o /dev/null -D - URL | grep -i '^payment-required:' | cut -d' ' -f2 | tr -d '\r' | base64 -d`.

To check a gate that charges only some clients, pass the header: `radius-cli sell check URL -H 'User-Agent: GPTBot/1.1'` should pass, and the same command with a browser User-Agent should fail (a human is served free). `sell check` does not look at CDN caching.

For an end-to-end proof on testnet, a funded `radius-cli` wallet can pay once: `RADIUS_HOME=.radius radius-cli sell check URL --pay --threshold 0.01` (testnet unless `--network mainnet` is given). Only do this when the user asks for a real payment; never on mainnet without explicit instruction.

**Minimum verify**, locally and again on the deployed URL:

1. Each paid route, unpaid, answers `402` with a `PAYMENT-REQUIRED` header.
2. The header decodes to an x402 v2 challenge with the expected network, asset, `payTo` and amount (`sell check URL --price ...` passes).
3. Every free route answers without a 402 (step 4).
4. When the user wants a real testnet payment: `radius-cli --network testnet wallet pay get URL --threshold 0.01 --include` answers 200 with a `PAYMENT-RESPONSE` receipt (or `sell check --pay` above).

#### 6. Deploy (optional hand-off)

After step 5 passes locally, hand deployment to the platform skill (Cloudflare/Wrangler, Railway, Vercel, …). Carry over: `PAY_TO`, `MPP_SECRET_KEY` (secret), facilitator URL/API key, and `network`. Behind a TLS proxy make the app see the public URL (`trust proxy` on Express; `publicRequest` in Next middleware and `security.allowedDomains` on Astro 5, see gotchas), or `resource.url` will name `http://` or `localhost`. Re-run `radius-cli sell check https://<deployed>/api/report` against the deployed URL. Do not stop at "deployment is out of scope" when the user asked to deploy.

### Gotchas (read before shipping)

Current SDK behavior with mitigations, from the seller evaluation suite: [gotchas.md](references/gotchas.md). The short list:

| Pitfall | Do this |
| --- | --- |
| `network` omitted | It is Radius **mainnet**. Name `'testnet'` or `'mainnet'`. |
| Paid handler registered before the middleware | Served free. `app.use(...)` first. |
| Unpaid `HEAD` on a paid `GET` runs the handler | Add `'HEAD /path'` with the same price, or refuse HEAD. |
| `'before'` mode and a 404/500 from the handler | Still paid. Validate inputs before charging. In Next and Astro middleware a missing page is paid, and `settle: 'after'` does not help in Next: charge only known pages. |
| Astro prerendered page | Not gated, and an unguarded middleware writes the 402 into the built HTML. Use `prerender = false` and the guard. |
| `resource.url` says `localhost` behind a proxy (`next start`, Astro 5) | Rebuild the request from `x-forwarded-host` (Next), set `security.allowedDomains` (Astro 5). |
| Origin sends `Surrogate-Control` / `CDN-Cache-Control` | They pass through on paid responses. Strip them in the Worker and gate before the cache. |
| Fastly Compute: `AbortSignal is not defined` | Add the shim from frameworks.md. |
| Node proxy forwards `req.body` to `fetch`, or returns the `fetch()` response | `duplex option is required` (Node 20, 22 and 24); on `@hono/node-server` a paid request is charged, then 500s. Buffer the body and copy the headers (gotchas item 17). |
| Hono handler sets `Cache-Control` | It replaces the SDK's `private`. Set `private` yourself. |
| `'after'` mode, failed settlement | Body withheld, handler headers leak (Hono, Express). Keep `'before'`. |
| Wildcard route priced once | A payment for `/api/x` unlocks `/api/y` at the same price. Price routes by value. |
| MPP on Express/Next adapters | Not served. Use `radiusPayments`/Hono for MPP. |
| Amount `1000000000000000` | 18-decimal mistake. SBC and USDC have 6: `'$0.001'` = `'1000'`. |

## Framework wrappers

Every wrapper takes the same route table and options; only the glue differs. Pick by what the project already uses. All examples target Radius testnet and read the recipient from `PAY_TO`.

| Wrapper | Package | Tested by this repo | Serves MPP |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `radiusPayments()` web-standard handler | `radius-sdk/server` | unit tests, seller eval (`web`) | yes |
| `radiusPayments()` Hono middleware | `radius-sdk/hono` | unit tests, seller eval (`hono`) | yes |
| `createRadiusServer()` + `@x402/express` | `radius-sdk/server`, `@x402/express` | unit tests, seller eval (`express`) | no |
| `radiusPayments()` in Next.js `middleware.ts` (Next 15, edge runtime) / `proxy.ts` (Next 16) | `radius-sdk/server` | seller eval `SELL-NEXT-MW` (Next 15.5.27, edge). `proxy.ts` and `runtime: 'nodejs'` were run by hand, not by the eval | yes |
| `radiusPayments()` in Astro `src/middleware.ts` (SSR) | `radius-sdk/server` | seller eval `SELL-ASTRO-MW` (Astro 4.15.12 and 5.18.1, Node adapter) | yes |
| `radiusPayments()` in a Cloudflare Worker in front of an origin | `radius-sdk/server` | seller eval `SELL-WORKER-PROXY` (workerd through `wrangler dev`) | yes |
| `radiusPayments()` in Fastly Compute | `radius-sdk/server` | **no**: run by hand on Viceroy, with a shim | yes |
| `radiusPayments()` Hono proxy on Node in front of an origin | `radius-sdk/hono`, `@hono/node-server` | **no**: run by hand (Node 22, mock facilitator) | yes |
| `createRadiusServer()` + `@x402/next` | `radius-sdk/server`, `@x402/next` | **no** | no |

Publisher sites (articles, pages, a CMS in front) use the middleware and in-front-of-origin rows: see [publishers.md](#publishers-charge-agents-keep-humans-free) for who pays and who reads free, CDN caching and paywalls.

Common options (`RadiusServerOptions` in `radius-sdk/server`): `network` or `networks`, `facilitator`, `settle` (`'before'` default, or `'after'`), `mpp`, `gasSponsoring` (`'auto'` default), `onSettled`, and network overrides (`rpcUrl`, `facilitatorUrl`, `asset`). `radiusPayments()` also takes `payTo` and `routes`; `createRadiusServer()` takes those in `radius.routes({ payTo, routes })`.

Route specs (`RouteSpec`): `price` (`'$0.001'`, `'0.001'`, `0.001`, `{ amount: '1000' }`, or a function of the request), `description`, `mimeType`, `maxTimeoutSeconds` (default 300), `payTo` (per-route override). A bare price is shorthand for `{ price }`.

### Hono (`radius-sdk/hono`)

```typescript
import { Hono } from 'hono';
import { radiusPayments, type RadiusPaymentVariables } from 'radius-sdk/hono';
type Env = { Bindings: { PAY_TO: `0x${string}`; MPP_SECRET_KEY: string }; Variables: RadiusPaymentVariables };
const app = new Hono<Env>();
app.use('/api/*', radiusPayments<Env>({
  network: 'testnet',
  payTo: (c) => c.env.PAY_TO,                       // Workers bindings; process.env.PAY_TO on Node
  routes: {
    'GET /api/lookup': { price: '$0.001', description: 'One lookup' },
    'HEAD /api/lookup': '$0.001',
  },
  onSettled: (receipt, c) => console.log('settled', receipt.transaction, c.req.path),
}));
app.get('/api/lookup', (c) => c.json({ ok: true, paidBy: c.get('radiusPayment')?.payer }));
export default app;                                  // Workers; on Node: serve({ fetch: app.fetch }) from @hono/node-server
```

- Dynamic `payTo`, `price` and `onSettled` receive the Hono context (`c.env`, `c.req`).
- With `settle: 'before'`, the paid handler reads the receipt from `c.get('radiusPayment')`.
- Options other than `payTo`, `price` and `onSettled` are read when the middleware is built, so `mpp.secretKey` cannot come from `c.env` directly. On Workers, build the middleware once, on the first request:

```typescript
let paid: ReturnType<typeof radiusPayments<Env>> | undefined;
app.use('/api/*', (c, next) => (paid ??= radiusPayments<Env>({ network: 'testnet', payTo: (c) => c.env.PAY_TO, mpp: { secretKey: c.env.MPP_SECRET_KEY }, routes }))(c, next));
```
- No `@hono/node-server`? A 10-line bridge works (this is what the eval's reference app does):

```typescript
import { createServer } from 'node:http';
createServer(async (req, res) => {
  const chunks: Buffer[] = [];
  for await (const chunk of req) chunks.push(chunk as Buffer);
  const headers = new Headers();
  for (const [k, v] of Object.entries(req.headers)) if (typeof v === 'string') headers.set(k, v);
  const body = req.method === 'GET' || req.method === 'HEAD' ? undefined : Buffer.concat(chunks);
  const response = await app.fetch(new Request(`http://${req.headers.host}${req.url}`, { method: req.method, headers, body }));
  res.writeHead(response.status, Object.fromEntries(response.headers));
  res.end(Buffer.from(await response.arrayBuffer()));
}).listen(Number(process.env.PORT ?? 3000), '127.0.0.1');
```

### Web-standard handler (`radius-sdk/server`)

For Cloudflare Workers without a framework, Bun, Deno, Node 22, and route handlers in Next.js (App Router), SvelteKit, Remix and Astro. `radiusPayments()` returns a `PaymentHandler`:

- `pay(request, next)`: charge if `request` matches a paid route, then call `next(request, payment)`; otherwise call `next` unpaid.
- `pay.wrap(next)`: the same as a single `(request) => Promise<Response>` fetch function.
- `pay.requiresPayment(request)`: true when the request matches a paid route (no I/O).

```typescript
import { radiusPayments } from 'radius-sdk/server';
const pay = radiusPayments({
  network: 'testnet',
  payTo: process.env.PAY_TO as `0x${string}`,
  routes: { 'GET /api/lookup': '$0.001', 'POST /api/query': { price: '$0.01' } },
});
export default { fetch: pay.wrap((request, payment) => Response.json({ ok: true, paidBy: payment?.payer })) };
```

**Next.js App Router route handler** (the recommended Next.js path: same tested code, MPP available):

```typescript
// app/api/report/route.ts
import { radiusPayments } from 'radius-sdk/server';
const pay = radiusPayments({
  network: 'testnet',
  payTo: process.env.PAY_TO as `0x${string}`,
  routes: { 'GET /api/report': '$0.001' },          // matched against the request path
});
export const GET = (request: Request) => pay(request, () => Response.json({ report: 'quarterly-sales' }));
```

**Validate, then charge** (any route handler; `examples/astro-seller` in the SDK does this): do fallible work before `pay`, and return the unpaid 404 there.

```typescript
export const GET = async (request: Request) => {
  const article = await loadArticle(new URL(request.url).searchParams.get('slug'));
  if (!article) return new Response('Not found', { status: 404 });   // nothing charged
  return pay(request, () => Response.json(article));                 // charge, then deliver
};
```

Building `radiusPayments()` at module scope does no I/O (safe on Workers): the facilitator's `/supported` is read on the first paid request after each cold start.

### Express (`createRadiusServer` + `@x402/express`)

```typescript
import express from 'express';
import { paymentMiddleware } from '@x402/express';
import { createRadiusServer } from 'radius-sdk/server';
const radius = createRadiusServer({
  network: 'testnet',
  facilitator: process.env.RADIUS_FACILITATOR_URL ? { url: process.env.RADIUS_FACILITATOR_URL } : undefined,
  onSettled: (receipt) => console.log('settled', receipt.transaction, receipt.payer),
});
const app = express();
app.set('trust proxy', true);                         // behind a TLS proxy, so resource.url says https
app.get('/health', (_req, res) => res.json({ ok: true }));
app.use(paymentMiddleware(
  radius.routes({
    payTo: process.env.PAY_TO as `0x${string}`,
    routes: { 'GET /api/report': { price: '$0.001', description: 'Quarterly report' }, 'HEAD /api/report': '$0.001' },
  }),
  radius.server,
));
app.get('/api/report', (_req, res) => res.json({ report: 'quarterly-sales' }));   // after app.use(...)
app.listen(Number(process.env.PORT ?? 3000));
```

- `app.use(paymentMiddleware(...))` must come **before** the paid routes; a route registered earlier is served free.
- Dynamic `payTo` / `price` receive the x402 request context (`ctx.adapter.getUrl()`, `ctx.adapter.getHeader(name)`), not `req`.
- `onSettled` receives the x402 context; `requestOf(context)` is `undefined` under this adapter.
- `mpp` is accepted by `createRadiusServer` but `@x402/express` only speaks x402: no MPP challenge is sent.
- The adapter fetches `/supported` when it is constructed (its `syncFacilitatorOnStart` default). That is fine on Node.
- The handler does not receive the receipt; read it in `onSettled`.

### Next.js middleware and proxy (`radiusPayments`)

Use `radiusPayments()` from `radius-sdk/server` in `middleware.ts` (Next 15) or `proxy.ts` (Next 16). Earlier Next versions with middleware were not tested. It is the recommended path for gating pages (ISR, static, dynamic, Pages Router): MPP works, nothing beyond `radius-sdk` is installed, and it runs on Next 15. The seller eval runs it on Next 15.5.27 in the edge runtime (`SELL-NEXT-MW`).

```typescript
// middleware.ts (Next 15). On Next 16 name the file proxy.ts and export `proxy` instead of `middleware`.
import { NextResponse, type NextRequest } from 'next/server';
import { radiusPayments } from 'radius-sdk/server';
const pay = radiusPayments({
  network: 'testnet',
  payTo: process.env.PAY_TO as `0x${string}`,
  facilitator: process.env.RADIUS_FACILITATOR_URL ? { url: process.env.RADIUS_FACILITATOR_URL } : undefined,
  mpp: process.env.MPP_SECRET_KEY ? { secretKey: process.env.MPP_SECRET_KEY } : undefined,
  routes: {
    'GET /articles/*': { price: '$0.001', description: 'One article' },
    'HEAD /articles/*': '$0.001',                      // price HEAD too: see gotchas
  },
});
/** `next start` builds req.url from its own hostname, so resource.url would say localhost: rebuild the public URL. */
function publicRequest(req: NextRequest): Request {
  const host = req.headers.get('x-forwarded-host') ?? req.headers.get('host');
  if (!host) return req;
  const proto = req.headers.get('x-forwarded-proto') ?? 'http';
  return new Request(`${proto}://${host}${req.nextUrl.pathname}${req.nextUrl.search}`, { method: req.method, headers: req.headers });
}
export async function middleware(req: NextRequest) {
  return pay(publicRequest(req), () => NextResponse.next());     // charge, then let Next render the page
}
export const config = { matcher: ['/articles/:path*', '/_next/data/:path*'] };
```

- **Edge or Node runtime.** The default edge runtime works (`ƒ Middleware` in the build output, `edge-runtime-webpack.js` in the manifest). On Next 15.5, `export const config = { runtime: 'nodejs', matcher: [...] }` also worked when run by hand. Build `radiusPayments()` at module scope as above: it does no I/O.
- **`NextResponse.next()`** is the "handler": the SDK settles first, then Next renders the page, including ISR and fully static pages. A paid request does not poison Next's ISR cache: an unpaid request right after a paid one still gets the 402 (eval).
- **Matcher.** Include every page path you charge for, and `/_next/data/:path*` for Pages Router sites. Next matches data requests (`/_next/data/<buildId>/legacy/one.json`) and RSC requests (`?_rsc=`, the `RSC` header) as the page path, so the route key `'GET /legacy/*'` covers them. The eval gates the JSON data URL and an RSC request with the page's route key alone. On Next 15.5.27 the data URL was also gated when `/_next/data/:path*` was left out of the matcher (checked by hand), because Next adds the data-URL prefix to each matcher, but listing it is harmless.
- **Price `HEAD`** next to each `GET`, as everywhere (gotchas, item 1). The eval confirms an unpaid HEAD gets a 402 on ISR, static and dynamic pages.
- **Public URL.** Without `publicRequest`, `pay(req, ...)` puts `http://localhost:<port>` into `resource.url` when the app is self-hosted behind a proxy, and `radius-cli sell check` fails the `resource` check on the deployed URL. Payments still settle. The eval records this as a known gap and shows that the rebuilt request names the forwarded host. On Vercel, `request.url` in production was not tested.
- **A missing page is still charged.** The middleware settles before Next renders and `NextResponse.next()` always looks like a 200 to the SDK, so a 404 page is paid for. Only charge pages that exist: check the slug against a known list, a manifest or your CMS before calling `pay`, and return `NextResponse.next()` unpaid for the rest, as the eval fixture does (a free 404, no challenge). `settle: 'after'` does not help in middleware: the eval shows a paid request for a missing page still settles, because the response `next()` returns is a 200.
- **Next 16.** `proxy.ts` ran the same code in Next 16.4.0 by hand (x402 and MPP paid 200, `sell check` clean). It is not in the eval.

#### `@x402/next`

`@x402/next` (`paymentProxy` with `radius.routes(...)` and `radius.server`) needs `next >= 16.2.6`, serves x402 only (no MPP challenge) and pulled in 809 packages in a trial install, so use it only on Next 16.2.6 or later when you do not need MPP. On Next 15, use `radiusPayments()` in middleware as above. In the same trial it paid 200 on Next 16.4, but `sell check` failed `resource.url` (`localhost`). It is not in this repository's eval.

```typescript
// proxy.ts: Next >= 16.2.6, x402 only
import { paymentProxy } from '@x402/next';
import { createRadiusServer } from 'radius-sdk/server';
const radius = createRadiusServer({ network: 'testnet' });
export const proxy = paymentProxy(
  radius.routes({ payTo: process.env.PAY_TO as `0x${string}`, routes: { 'GET /articles/*': '$0.001', 'HEAD /articles/*': '$0.001' } }),
  radius.server,
);
export const config = { matcher: ['/articles/:path*'] };
```

Check `@x402/next`'s README for the export name of your Next version. `radius.http({ payTo, routes })` returns an `x402HTTPResourceServer` for adapters' `…FromHTTPServer` variants.

### Astro middleware (SSR)

Gate pages with `src/middleware.ts` when the site is server-rendered (`output: 'server'`, or per-page `prerender = false` with an adapter):

```typescript
// src/middleware.ts (Astro 5)
import { defineMiddleware } from 'astro:middleware';
import { radiusPayments } from 'radius-sdk/server';
const pay = radiusPayments({
  network: 'testnet',
  payTo: process.env.PAY_TO as `0x${string}`,
  mpp: process.env.MPP_SECRET_KEY ? { secretKey: process.env.MPP_SECRET_KEY } : undefined,
  routes: { 'GET /articles/*': '$0.001', 'HEAD /articles/*': '$0.001' },
});
export const onRequest = defineMiddleware((context, next) => {
  if (context.isPrerendered) return next();         // Astro 5: the build-time render of a prerendered page
  return pay(context.request, () => next());        // charge, then render the page
});
```

> **Warning: prerendered pages are not gated, and an unguarded middleware can corrupt them.**
> - A page with `export const prerender = true` is built once and served as a static file by the adapter. The request-time middleware does not gate it: an unpaid request gets the page with `200` and `Cache-Control: public, max-age=0`. Keep every route you charge for server-rendered: `export const prerender = false` (the default with `output: 'server'`).
> - The build renders prerendered pages **through the middleware**. Without the guard, `pay` answers that build-time request with its `402` and Astro writes the 402 body into the built page (`dist/client/<page>/index.html` contained `{}`, or an error JSON when the facilitator was unreachable). The build still exits 0. Humans then get a broken page, silently. Check the built HTML after the first build.
> - **Astro 4** has no `context.isPrerendered`. A build-time render has no `Host` header, so guard with `if (!context.request.headers.get('host')) return next();`.

Both guards and the unguarded failure are exercised by `SELL-ASTRO-MW` (Astro 4.15.12 and 5.18.1 on `@astrojs/node`).

- **Public URL on Astro 5.** Astro 5 ignores `Host` and `X-Forwarded-Host` when it builds `request.url` unless `security.allowedDomains` names the host, so `resource.url` says `http://localhost/...` and `sell check` fails. With `security: { allowedDomains: [{ hostname: 'www.example.com' }] }` in `astro.config.mjs`, a request with `X-Forwarded-Host: www.example.com` (and `X-Forwarded-Proto`) produces the right URL (eval). Astro 4.15 honoured `X-Forwarded-Host` and `X-Forwarded-Proto` without configuration.
- **Other adapters.** Only `@astrojs/node` was run. The Netlify adapter's `edgeMiddleware`, which reportedly also runs for prerendered pages, and the Cloudflare adapter were **not tested**.
- **Validate before charging.** The middleware settles before the page renders: see the Next.js note on missing pages. The `astro-seller` example in the SDK validates inside an API route instead.

### In front of an origin: Cloudflare Worker

When the CMS or framework is not yours to change, put a Worker in front and pass only paid requests to the origin. This is the pattern `SELL-WORKER-PROXY` runs (workerd through `wrangler dev`, with a local origin):

```typescript
import { radiusPayments, type PaymentHandler } from 'radius-sdk/server';
interface Env { ORIGIN: string; PAY_TO: `0x${string}`; MPP_SECRET_KEY: string; RADIUS_FACILITATOR_URL?: string }
let pay: PaymentHandler | undefined;
export default {
  async fetch(request: Request, env: Env): Promise<Response> {
    // Built on the first request: bindings are not readable at module scope.
    pay ??= radiusPayments({
      network: 'testnet',
      payTo: env.PAY_TO,
      facilitator: env.RADIUS_FACILITATOR_URL ? { url: env.RADIUS_FACILITATOR_URL } : undefined,
      mpp: { secretKey: env.MPP_SECRET_KEY },
      routes: { 'GET /articles/*': '$0.001', 'HEAD /articles/*': '$0.001' },
    });
    const url = new URL(request.url);
    const toOrigin = (req: Request) => {
      const headers = new Headers(req.headers);
      headers.delete('payment-signature');                                    // do not forward payment credentials
      if (/^payment\s/i.test(headers.get('authorization') ?? '')) headers.delete('authorization');
      return fetch(new Request(env.ORIGIN + url.pathname + url.search, { method: req.method, headers, redirect: 'manual' }));
    };
    return pay(request, toOrigin);                                            // paths outside `routes` pass straight through
  },
};
```

- Unpaid requests get the 402 and the origin is never called. Paid requests return the origin's response with the receipt added.
- **The origin's status is visible here.** The default `settle: 'before'` still charges for an origin 404. `settle: 'after'` charges only when the origin answers below 400; the eval confirms no charge on a 404 and a charge on a 200. Use a second `radiusPayments({ settle: 'after', ... })` for those routes if you want that. The trade-offs of `'after'` are in [settlement.md](#settlement-order-receipts-paid-errors-and-replays) and gotchas items 4 and 11.
- **The origin's headers pass through to the payer**, including `Set-Cookie`, `Surrogate-Control`, `CDN-Cache-Control` and `Surrogate-Key`. See [publishers.md](#publishers-charge-agents-keep-humans-free) for the caching consequences and the stripping wrapper the eval verifies.
- Gate everything on the Worker route, or add a condition to charge only agents: [publishers.md](#publishers-charge-agents-keep-humans-free).

### In front of an origin: Hono on Node

For an origin in any language (Python, Go, …) that you deploy next to, without Cloudflare. Paid routes are gated; every other path, including discovery and auth, passes through free. Run by hand (Node 22.22, `@hono/node-server` 2.1, mock facilitator): unpaid 402, paid `POST` 200 with the body forwarded, free routes untouched. Not in the eval.

Build the app as in [Hono](#hono-radius-sdkhono) above (`app.use(radiusPayments({ network, payTo, routes }))`, `HEAD` priced next to each paid `GET`), serve it with `serve({ fetch: app.fetch })` from `@hono/node-server`, and register one pass-through after the middleware. Only the pass-through is Node-specific:

```typescript
app.all('/*', async (c) => {                                    // paid (after settlement) and free requests
  const req = c.req.raw;
  const url = new URL(req.url);
  const drop = ['host', 'content-length', 'expect', 'connection', 'keep-alive', 'te', 'trailer', 'transfer-encoding', 'upgrade',
    ...(req.headers.get('connection') ?? '').split(',').map((h) => h.trim().toLowerCase())];   // Node's fetch throws on several
  const headers = new Headers([...req.headers].filter(([k]) => !drop.includes(k) && !k.startsWith('proxy-')));
  headers.set('accept-encoding', 'identity');                  // ask for an uncompressed body
  headers.delete('payment-signature');                         // as in the Worker's toOrigin above
  if (/^payment\s/i.test(headers.get('authorization') ?? '')) headers.delete('authorization');
  const body = req.method === 'GET' || req.method === 'HEAD' ? undefined : await req.arrayBuffer();   // gotchas item 17
  const res = await fetch(process.env.ORIGIN_URL + url.pathname + url.search, { method: req.method, headers, body, redirect: 'manual', signal: req.signal });
  const out = new Headers(res.headers);                        // mutable copy: gotchas item 17
  const codings = (res.headers.get('content-encoding') ?? '').split(',').map((e) => e.trim().toLowerCase()).filter(Boolean);
  if (res.body && codings.length && codings.every((e) => ['gzip', 'x-gzip', 'deflate', 'br'].includes(e))) {
    out.delete('content-encoding');                            // compressed anyway: fetch decoded the body but kept these
    out.delete('content-length');
  }
  return new Response(res.body, { status: res.status, headers: out });
});
```

A Dockerfile needs only `FROM node:22-slim`, `npm ci --omit=dev` and `CMD ["node", "server.ts"]`: Node 22.18 or later runs TypeScript directly (set `"type": "module"` in `package.json`).

### In front of an origin: Fastly Compute

Verified by hand on Viceroy (`fastly compute serve`, `@fastly/js-compute` 4.0) only: it is **not** in this repository's eval, and no Fastly production service was tried. `@x402/core` calls `AbortSignal.timeout()` and Compute's runtime had no `AbortSignal`, so without a shim every paid route answered `502 facilitator_error: ... AbortSignal is not defined`. With this shim imported first, the 402, an x402 payment and an MPP payment all worked:

```javascript
// src/polyfill.js: import it before 'radius-sdk/server'
if (typeof globalThis.AbortSignal === 'undefined') {
  class AbortSignalShim extends EventTarget {
    constructor() { super(); this.aborted = false; this.reason = undefined; }
    throwIfAborted() {}
    static timeout() { return new AbortSignalShim(); }
    static any() { return new AbortSignalShim(); }
  }
  globalThis.AbortSignal = AbortSignalShim;
}
```

The shim gives up the facilitator timeout. Build the handler lazily (as in the Worker above) and send origin requests through a named backend: `fetch(new Request(origin + path), { backend: 'origin' })`. The facilitator was reached through a dynamic backend locally; whether production services need that enabled per service was **not verified**.

**Fastly services that are VCL only cannot run this.** The gate must live in the origin framework (Next, Astro, Express, a Worker) or in a Compute service in front.

## Publishers: charge agents, keep humans free

For a site that sells articles or pages (a CMS, a news site, documentation) and wants AI crawlers and agents to pay while readers do not. The wrappers are in [frameworks.md](#framework-wrappers): `radiusPayments()` in Next.js or Astro middleware, or in a Worker or Compute service in front of the origin. This page covers what is different for content.

How to read it: statements marked **eval** come from `pnpm eval:payments:sell` (`SELL-NEXT-MW`, `SELL-ASTRO-MW`, `SELL-WORKER-PROXY`, `SELL-SELECTIVE`), which run the real SDK, framework and buyer against a mock facilitator. **Not tested** marks behavior taken from vendor documentation or reasoning: Netlify edge middleware, Vercel production, Cloudflare and Fastly cache behavior, Piano and Zephr, and real chain settlement.

### 1. Where the gate goes

| The site runs | Put the gate in | Notes |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Next.js (self-hosted or Vercel) | `middleware.ts` / `proxy.ts` | Also gates ISR, static, RSC and `/_next/data` requests (eval). |
| Astro with a server adapter | `src/middleware.ts` | Only server-rendered pages. Prerendered pages are not gated: see the warning in frameworks.md. |
| A CMS or framework you cannot change | A Cloudflare Worker (or Fastly Compute service) in front | The gate runs before the origin and, if the Worker is on the cached path, before the CDN cache. |
| Fastly with VCL only | The origin framework, or a Compute service | VCL cannot run the SDK. |
| Netlify edge middleware, Vercel middleware | Not tested | Documentation says both run before the CDN cache; neither was run here. |

Wherever it goes, the gate must run **before the cache** (section 4) and charge only pages that exist (section 8).

### 2. Humans free, agents pay

`radiusPayments()` charges every request that matches a route. To charge only some clients, run it only for those requests. This wrapper is the one `SELL-SELECTIVE` runs (`evaluations/agent-payments/fixtures/sell-selective/gate.mjs` in the repository):

```typescript
import { radiusPayments } from 'radius-sdk/server';
const pay = radiusPayments({ network: 'testnet', payTo: process.env.PAY_TO as `0x${string}`, routes: { 'GET /articles/*': '$0.001', 'HEAD /articles/*': '$0.001' } });
const AI_AGENT_UA = /GPTBot|OAI-SearchBot|ChatGPT-User|ClaudeBot|Claude-User|Claude-SearchBot|PerplexityBot|Perplexity-User|CCBot|Bytespider|Amazonbot|meta-externalagent|Diffbot/i;
function isAgent(request: Request): boolean {
  if (request.headers.has('payment-signature') || /^payment\s/i.test(request.headers.get('authorization') ?? '')) return true; // a payment is always handled
  if (request.headers.has('signature-agent')) return true;                       // Web Bot Auth claim
  const ua = request.headers.get('user-agent') ?? '';
  return AI_AGENT_UA.test(ua) || !/^Mozilla\//.test(ua);                          // known agent, or not a browser
}
export function gate(request: Request, origin: (request: Request) => Promise<Response>, isSubscriber: (request: Request) => boolean) {
  if (isSubscriber(request)) return origin(request);   // verified subscribers read free
  if (!isAgent(request)) return origin(request);        // humans read free
  return pay(request, origin);                          // charge, then serve the same page
}
```

In Next middleware the `origin` is `() => NextResponse.next()`; in a Worker it is the `fetch` to the origin. The eval checks, over HTTP with the real buyer:

- A browser User-Agent gets the page with no challenge and the facilitator is never called. A browser `HEAD` is free too.
- GPTBot, ChatGPT-User and ClaudeBot UAs, a script UA, the default `node` UA, and a browser UA with a `Signature-Agent` header get a `402` (`no-store`, no content). A bot `HEAD` gets a `402`.
- A bot pays over x402 and over MPP and gets the page; the origin runs once per paid request.
- A payment header sent with a browser UA is still verified and settled, so a payment is never silently dropped by the predicate.
- `radius-cli sell check URL --price '$0.001' -H 'User-Agent: GPTBot/1.1'` passes, and the same command with a browser User-Agent fails (that request is served without payment), which is how you check that humans stay free.

### 3. Who counts as an agent

**Header and User-Agent checks are claims, not proof.** An agent that sends a browser User-Agent reads for free. The eval records this as a documented limitation, not a bug: the spoofed request got the page with no charge. Use the safe direction: let a claim make a request *pay* (a bot UA, a `Signature-Agent` header), and let only a **verified** credential make it *free* (a subscriber session you validate, a verified bot signature). Presence of a cookie proves nothing: the eval's forged `session=` cookie gets a `402`, the valid one does not, because the fixture checks the value against the subscriber store.

- **Training versus retrieval.** Crawlers that collect training data, search indexers and agents fetching a page for one user are separate user agents at the large vendors, for example `GPTBot` (training), `OAI-SearchBot` (search) and `ChatGPT-User` (a user's request) at OpenAI, `ClaudeBot`, `Claude-SearchBot` and `Claude-User` at Anthropic, and `PerplexityBot` and `Perplexity-User` at Perplexity. Which of them you charge, allow free or refuse is a business decision, and a publisher may price them differently by branching on the token. The list above is the vendors' published tokens as of this writing; they change, so read each vendor's current documentation.
- **Web Bot Auth (`Signature-Agent`).** Agents that sign their requests (HTTP message signatures with a `Signature-Agent` header naming where their keys are published) can be verified. The SDK does **not** verify signatures: the wrapper above only treats the header as a claim and charges. To make a verified bot free or to trust its identity, verify the signature yourself or use your CDN's verification.
- **Cloudflare.** On plans with Bot Management, a Worker can read `request.cf.botManagement` (for example `verifiedBot`) and the verified-bots categories. Not exercised here: workerd's local `wrangler dev` has no bot data.
- **Subscribers.** Check the subscriber's credential at the gate, before the agent test, as the wrapper does. A subscriber who is also an agent is free.

### 4. CDN caching

What the SDK does today (eval, Worker and Next cases):

| Response | Headers |
| --- | --- |
| Unpaid `402` | `Cache-Control: no-store`; no content; the origin is never called |
| Paid `200` | the origin's `Cache-Control` with `private` appended (`public, s-maxage=600` became `public, s-maxage=600, private`); every other origin header is passed through unchanged, including `Surrogate-Control`, `CDN-Cache-Control`, `Surrogate-Key` and `Set-Cookie` |
| Free human page | whatever the origin sends. A Next.js ISR page sends `s-maxage=60, stale-while-revalidate=...`, which a CDN that caches HTML may store |

What that means (from CDN documentation, **not tested here**: no real CDN was run):

- **The free response can be served to agents.** If a CDN in front of the origin caches the human HTML, the cached copy goes to agent requests too and the gate behind it never runs. Put the gate **before** the cache (a Worker, a Compute service, edge middleware that runs ahead of cache lookup), or make agent traffic bypass the HTML cache with a cache rule on the same predicate (as spoofable as the predicate).
- **A paid response may be cached.** `private` is appended to `Cache-Control`, but Fastly documents `Surrogate-Control` and Cloudflare documents `CDN-Cache-Control` as taking precedence over it, and the SDK leaves both in place. A cacheable paid page can then be served to the next unpaid request.
- **Next.js's own ISR cache** was not poisoned: an unpaid request after a paid one still got the `402` (eval). That is the framework cache, not a CDN, and Astro's was not tested.

Until the SDK strips these itself, remove them from paid responses in the Worker or Compute layer. This wrapper is verified by `SELL-WORKER-PROXY` (the paid response had no `Surrogate-Control`, `CDN-Cache-Control` or `Surrogate-Key`, and `Cache-Control: private, no-store`):

```typescript
function privateOnly(response: Response): Response {
  const headers = new Headers(response.headers);
  for (const name of ['surrogate-control', 'cdn-cache-control', 'cloudflare-cdn-cache-control', 'vercel-cdn-cache-control', 'surrogate-key']) headers.delete(name);
  headers.set('cache-control', 'private, no-store');
  return new Response(response.body, { status: response.status, statusText: response.statusText, headers });
}
// return privateOnly(await pay(request, toOrigin));
```

The origin's `Set-Cookie` also reaches the payer (eval). Strip origin session cookies in the same place if the payer should not receive them. For middleware inside the origin framework (Next, Astro) there is no layer to strip headers in: set `Cache-Control: private, no-store` on paid paths from the origin, and keep CDN-specific headers off those paths.

### 5. Coexisting with Piano and Zephr

Not tested against either product. Reasoning only:

- A **client-side** paywall (a script that hides the article after it loads) leaves the full HTML in the response, so an agent that does not run scripts already reads everything. The payment gate in front is the actual protection, and it should run before the page is served.
- A paywall that decides **on the server or at the CDN edge** (Zephr is commonly deployed that way) makes its own free or blocked decision. Decide the order once: for agents, the payment gate should answer first, and verified subscribers should reach neither gate. Check where your paywall runs before choosing where the gate goes.

### 6. Assets on other domains

The gate only sees requests to your own domain. Images and files on a third-party CDN (for example `cdn.sanity.io`, or an image CDN behind Arc or Strapi) are fetched directly from that CDN and stay free whatever your middleware does. Decide whether that matters for your content. To gate an asset, serve it through your own domain (not tested).

### 7. Discovery

Nothing here is generated for you: no `robots.txt`, no `llms.txt`, no `Content-Signal` line. The default `402` for a browser-like client was an 804-byte HTML "Payment Required" page with no link to pricing or subscription in a manual run. Publish your own terms, for example a `/pricing.md` page listing the paid paths, prices and permitted use (Radius defines no format for it), and point to it from `robots.txt` and `llms.txt`. `Content-Signal` in `robots.txt` states preferences (`ai-train`, `search`, `ai-input`); it is advisory and nothing enforces it. Agents that find the 402 directly need no discovery: it carries the price and where to pay.

### 8. Missing pages and other charge-then-fail cases

Middleware settles **before** the page renders. A request for a page that does not exist is charged and then answered `404` (eval, Next: a paid `/naive/nope` settled and returned `404`). Mitigations, from what the eval ran:

- **Charge only pages you know exist.** Check the slug against a list, a manifest or your CMS inside the middleware, before `pay`, and return `NextResponse.next()` (or `next()`) unpaid for the rest. The eval's `/articles/nope` gets a free `404` and no challenge, and nothing is settled.
- **`settle: 'after'`** charges only when the handler's response is below 400, so it works where the status is visible: a Worker in front of an origin (the eval: a paid `/after/nope` answered `404` and settled nothing, and `/after/hello` settled once). It does **not** help in Next middleware: `NextResponse.next()` is always a `200`, and a paid missing page still settled (eval). Astro middleware in `'after'` mode was not tested.
- The default `settle: 'before'` charges for an origin `404` in a Worker too (eval, recorded as a known gap).

See [settlement.md](#settlement-order-receipts-paid-errors-and-replays) for what `'after'` costs.

### 9. Verify

```bash
radius-cli sell check https://example.com/articles/real-slug --price '$0.001' --probe-head -H 'User-Agent: GPTBot/1.1'   # agents pay
radius-cli sell check https://example.com/articles/real-slug -H 'User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Linux x86_64)'          # expected to FAIL: humans are served free
```

`sell check` does not look at caching headers or at whether a CDN serves the free copy to agents. Request the page twice from outside the CDN, as an agent, before and after a human has loaded it, and confirm both get a `402`.

---

## Protocols on the seller: x402 v2 and MPP

A radius-sdk seller always speaks x402 v2. MPP is opt-in, alongside it, on `radiusPayments()` (web-standard) and `radius-sdk/hono` only. Both end in the same thing: an authorization of the network's stablecoin, verified and settled by the network's x402 facilitator.

| | x402 v2 | MPP (`evm` charge) |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Unpaid answer | `402` + `PAYMENT-REQUIRED` (base64 JSON, offers in `accepts`) | the same `402` + one `WWW-Authenticate: Payment …` per network |
| Paid request | `PAYMENT-SIGNATURE` (also reads legacy `X-PAYMENT`) | `Authorization: Payment …` |
| Receipt | `PAYMENT-RESPONSE` | `Payment-Receipt` |
| Wrappers | all, including `@x402/express` / `@x402/next` | `radiusPayments()` and `radius-sdk/hono` only |
| Methods | `exact` via EIP-3009 or Permit2 | EIP-3009 authorization |

### x402 v2 `exact`

What the SDK puts in each offer (`accepts[i]`), per network, per route:

- `scheme: 'exact'`. The seller only offers `exact`: no `upto`, no second asset or transfer method on the same network.
- `network`: CAIP-2 (`eip155:72344` testnet, `eip155:723487` mainnet, `eip155:84532` Base Sepolia, `eip155:8453` Base).
- `asset`: the network's payment asset (SBC on Radius, `0x33ad9e4BD16B69B5BFdED37D8B5D9fF9aba014Fb` on both; USDC on Base), unless `asset` is overridden.
- `amount`: atomic units. A USD price is converted with the asset's decimals (6 for SBC and USDC): `'$0.001'` → `'1000'`.
- `payTo`, `maxTimeoutSeconds` (route option, default 300), and `extra: { assetTransferMethod, name, version }` (the asset's EIP-712 domain: `"Stable Coin"` / `"1"` for SBC).
- Top level: `resource: { url, description, mimeType }` (the URL the request was made to), and `extensions.eip2612GasSponsoring` when declared.

**How the transfer method is chosen.** `RadiusExactScheme` advertises whichever `assetTransferMethod` the facilitator's `/supported` lists **first** for that network and scheme, and `eip3009` when the facilitator names none. The Radius facilitators list `eip3009` then `permit2`, so a Radius seller offers **EIP-3009** (no approval, no gas for the payer). A facilitator that lists `permit2` first gets a Permit2 offer (the buyer needs a Permit2 allowance; see sponsoring below). You do not pick it in code.

**Gas sponsoring.** With `gasSponsoring: 'auto'` (default), `eip2612GasSponsoring` is declared only when the facilitator's `/supported` lists that extension; `true` / `false` force it. It only matters for Permit2 offers: it lets a first-time payer approve Permit2 by signature.

**Facilitator calls.** In the default `settle: 'before'` flow the seller calls `/settle` only (no separate `/verify`). In `settle: 'after'` it calls `/verify`, runs the handler, then `/settle`. See [settlement.md](#settlement-order-receipts-paid-errors-and-replays).

### MPP

Enable it with `mpp` on `radiusPayments()` or `radius-sdk/hono`:

```typescript
radiusPayments({
  network: 'testnet',
  payTo: process.env.PAY_TO as `0x${string}`,
  routes: { 'GET /api/report': '$0.001' },
  mpp: { secretKey: process.env.MPP_SECRET_KEY!, realm: 'api.example.com' },   // realm optional
});
```

- `secretKey` must be **at least 32 characters** of random data (`openssl rand -base64 32`); the constructor throws otherwise. Keep it secret and **the same on every instance** serving the same routes: challenges are stateless, and their id is an HMAC of the challenge parameters under this key. A credential issued under another key is refused (`not issued by this server`).
- `realm` defaults to the request's host.
- Each 402 gets one challenge per network that **mirrors an x402 `exact` EIP-3009 offer** (same amount, asset, recipient, network; `expires` = now + `maxTimeoutSeconds`). A network whose offer is Permit2 (facilitator lists `permit2` first) gets no MPP challenge, because the MPP `evm` charge is an EIP-3009 authorization.
- A credential is checked for its HMAC id, realm, expiry, the route's **current** price and recipient, and the nonce bound to the challenge, then verified and settled through the network's facilitator as an x402 `exact` EIP-3009 payment, before or after the handler per `settle`. Tampered amounts or expiries, expired challenges, and replays are refused.
- Paid responses carry `Payment-Receipt`; the handler's `payment` and `onSettled` get a receipt with `protocol: 'mpp'`.
- **Upstream adapters do not serve MPP.** `createRadiusServer({ mpp })` accepts the option, but `@x402/express` and `@x402/next` only see x402: no `WWW-Authenticate` challenge is sent. Use `radiusPayments()` or Hono when MPP matters.

Buyers pick the protocol: `radius-cli wallet pay` and `createRadiusFetch` default to x402 when both are offered (`--protocol mpp` / `protocols: ['mpp']` to prefer MPP).

### Checking what you serve

`radius-cli sell check <url>` decodes both challenges with the SDK and reports each x402 offer and each MPP challenge (amount and decimals, asset, recipient, expiry, and whether the MPP challenge mirrors an x402 offer). A seller without MPP is reported as `info`, not a failure.

## Networks and facilitators

### Networks

| `network` | Chain | Asset | Default facilitator |
| --- | --- | --- | --- |
| `'testnet'` / `'radius-testnet'` | Radius testnet, `eip155:72344` | SBC `0x33ad9e4BD16B69B5BFdED37D8B5D9fF9aba014Fb`, 6 decimals | `https://facilitator.testnet.radiustech.xyz` |
| `'mainnet'` / `'radius'` — **the default when `network` is omitted** | Radius, `eip155:723487` | SBC (same address), 6 decimals | `https://facilitator.radiustech.xyz` |
| `'base-sepolia'` | Base Sepolia, `eip155:84532` | USDC `0x036CbD53842c5426634e7929541eC2318f3dCF7e`, 6 decimals | `https://x402.org/facilitator` |
| `'base'` | Base, `eip155:8453` | USDC `0x833589fCD6eDb6E08f4c7C32D4f71b54bdA02913`, 6 decimals | **none**: construction throws until you pass `facilitator` |

`radiusEnv()` from `radius-sdk` reads `RADIUS_NETWORK` (default `'mainnet'`), `RADIUS_FACILITATOR_URL`, `RADIUS_FACILITATOR_API_KEY`, `RADIUS_ASSET_ADDRESS` and `RADIUS_PAY_TO` for spreading into `radiusPayments({ ...radiusEnv(), routes })`; mind its mainnet default.

Any other EVM chain: `definePaymentNetwork({ chain, asset: { address, symbol, decimals, name, version }, facilitatorUrl })` (the asset's EIP-712 `name` / `version` must match the token contract, or signatures will not verify).

**Several networks.** `networks` instead of `network`: every route offers one payment option per network, in order, each settled by its own facilitator.

```typescript
radiusPayments({
  networks: ['testnet', { network: 'base-sepolia', facilitator: { url: 'https://x402.org/facilitator' } }],
  payTo: process.env.PAY_TO as `0x${string}`,     // the same address on every EVM chain
  routes: { 'GET /api/report': '$0.001' },        // 0.001 SBC on Radius, 0.001 USDC on Base Sepolia
});
```

- Top-level `facilitator` and overrides (`rpcUrl`, `asset`, `facilitatorUrl`) apply to the **first** network only; give the others theirs in `{ network, facilitator }`.
- A price naming an asset (`{ amount, asset }`) is rejected with several networks; use a USD price or a bare atomic amount.
- A network listed twice throws. Each facilitator only answers for its own network (a multi-chain facilitator configured for Base cannot capture Radius payments).

### Facilitator options

`facilitator` is either `FacilitatorOptions` or a `FacilitatorClient`:

| Option | Effect |
| --- | --- |
| `{ url }` | Another hosted facilitator (trailing slashes are stripped). |
| `{ apiKey }` | Sent as an `x-api-key` header on `/supported`, `/verify` and `/settle`. A static header only: no JWTs, no request signing. |
| `{ live: false }` | Radius networks only: skip the `/supported` request and use the SDK's built-in Radius answer (faster cold start; stale if the facilitator changes). Throws on other networks. |
| `{ timeoutMs }` | Per-call timeout. A timeout or dropped connection becomes a `502` (unknown outcome), not a `402`. |
| a `FacilitatorClient` | Any object with `getSupported()`, `verify(payload, requirements)` and `settle(payload, requirements)` (the interface from `@x402/core/server`): a self-hosted facilitator or one with its own auth. |

`/supported` is read lazily, on the first paid request after each cold start, by `radiusPayments()` and Hono (no module-scope I/O). If it fails the route answers `502` and the next request retries. The upstream adapters (`@x402/express`) read it when constructed.

**Coinbase CDP facilitator: not supported out of the box.** CDP authenticates each request with a JWT, which `{ url, apiKey }` cannot send. It needs a custom `FacilitatorClient` that adds the JWT; the SDK ships none and no test covers one. Tell the user this rather than configuring `{ url, apiKey }` against CDP.

**Third-party facilitators** may list different networks, transfer methods or extensions. Check before relying on one:

```bash
curl -s https://facilitator.testnet.radiustech.xyz/supported | jq '.kinds[] | {network, scheme, method: .extra.assetTransferMethod}'
radius-cli sell check http://127.0.0.1:3000/api/report --facilitator https://facilitator.example
```

`sell check` fails an offer whose scheme, network or transfer method the facilitator does not list, and warns when the 402 declares gas sponsoring the facilitator does not offer.

### Environment variables a seller usually needs

| Variable | Used for |
| --- | --- |
| `PAY_TO` (or `RADIUS_PAY_TO` with `radiusEnv()`) | recipient address |
| `RADIUS_FACILITATOR_URL` / `RADIUS_FACILITATOR_API_KEY` | non-default facilitator |
| `MPP_SECRET_KEY` | `mpp.secretKey`, a secret, the same on every instance |
| `RADIUS_NETWORK` | only if the code reads it; name the network in code otherwise |

Sellers never need a private key: the facilitator submits the settlement transaction.

---

## Settlement order, receipts, paid errors and replays

### `settle: 'before'` (default)

1. Unpaid request → `402` with the challenge; the handler does not run.
2. Paid request → the facilitator's `/settle` (no separate `/verify`). Settlement failed or was rejected → `402`, handler not run. Facilitator unreachable, timed out or dropped the connection → `502` (unknown outcome), handler not run.
3. Settled → the handler runs with the receipt (`payment` argument of `pay(request, next)` / `pay.wrap`, or `c.get('radiusPayment')` on Hono), and the response carries `PAYMENT-RESPONSE` (MPP: `Payment-Receipt`) and `Cache-Control: private`.

Paid bodies stream through untouched (good for SSE and token streams).

**A paid error is still paid.** If the handler then returns 404 or 500, or throws, the money has already moved: the SDK returns that status *with the receipt* so the buyer can reconcile instead of paying again (a thrown error becomes a `500` with the receipt). So:

- Do fallible work (lookups, validation, upstream calls you can make first) **before** the payment handler runs, and return unpaid 4xx there. With `radius-sdk/server`: `if (!item) return new Response('Not found', { status: 404 }); return pay(request, () => …)`.
- Record delivery failures next to the receipt's `transaction`, so support can refund or re-deliver.

### `settle: 'after'`

1. Paid request → `/verify`. Invalid → `402`; the handler never runs.
2. Valid → the handler runs **before** money moves. The response body is buffered (no streaming).
3. Handler answered `< 400` → `/settle`. Success → the buffered response with `PAYMENT-RESPONSE`. Settlement rejected → `402`; unknown outcome → `502`. In both cases the body is withheld.
4. Handler answered `>= 400` (or threw) → nothing is settled; the error goes back unpaid.

Use it only when the handler's work is cheap to throw away: two concurrent requests with the same payment are both verified and both run the handler; one settles and is delivered, the other's settlement fails and its body is withheld. Response **headers** of a failed settlement can still leak on Hono and Express (see [gotchas.md](#seller-gotchas-current-sdk-behavior-and-mitigations)).

### `onSettled`

```typescript
radiusPayments({ …, onSettled: async (receipt, request) => { await db.payments.insert({ tx: receipt.transaction, payer: receipt.payer, amount: receipt.amount, network: receipt.network, path: new URL(request.url).pathname }); } });
```

- Called once per settled payment, whichever wrapper served it: with the `Request` (`radius-sdk/server`), the Hono context (`radius-sdk/hono`), or the x402 request context (`createRadiusServer`; `requestOf(context)` is `undefined` under upstream adapters).
- It records **settlement, not delivery**: in `'before'` mode it fires before the handler runs, and the handler can still fail.
- An error it throws is logged (`radius-sdk onSettled hook failed`) and does not change the response. Do not rely on it to block delivery.
- The receipt (`PaymentReceipt`): `success`, `protocol` (`'x402'` / `'mpp'`), `transaction`, `network`, `payer`, `amount`, `explorerUrl`.

A facilitator's `success` reports a submitted settlement. When you need independent proof, reconcile `transaction` on chain (`getSettlement(network, txHash)` from `radius-sdk/client`, or `radius-cli receipt <tx>`).

### Unknown outcomes (`502`)

A facilitator that times out (`facilitator: { timeoutMs }`), drops the connection, or answers with something that is not an x402 response leaves the outcome unknown: the settlement may have reached the chain. The SDK answers `502` (`facilitator_error`), never `402`, so a buyer does not read it as "rejected, nothing moved". Log these with the request and payer; a buyer that retries signs a new authorization.

### Replays and idempotency

- The seller keeps **no replay cache and no idempotency store**. Replay protection is the authorization's nonce: the facilitator and the chain refuse a second settlement of the same EIP-3009 or Permit2 authorization, and MPP challenges bind the nonce.
- In `'before'` mode a replayed header fails at `/settle`, so the handler runs once per payment, also under concurrency.
- In `'after'` mode a concurrent replay runs the handler twice and delivers once (see above): make paid handlers idempotent or side-effect free there.
- If your own system needs exactly-once side effects per payment, key them by `receipt.transaction` (or payer + nonce) in your database.

### Caching

Paid responses get `private` added to `Cache-Control` so a shared cache does not hand paid content to the next caller, and the 402 is `no-store`. A handler's own `public` directive is kept next to `private`, and on Hono a handler's `Cache-Control` replaces the SDK's `private`. Do not mark paid responses `public`.

---

## Seller gotchas: current SDK behavior and mitigations

These are behaviors of `radius-sdk` 0.5 and the upstream x402 adapters as the repository's seller evaluation (`pnpm eval:payments:sell`) records them: graded checks marked XFAIL (a known gap) or behaviors recorded under `observations`. Items that were run by hand and are not in the eval say so. Treat them as how the code works today, and apply the mitigation in the integration. If a later SDK release fixes one, the eval's XFAIL marker is removed.

### 1. An unpaid `HEAD` runs the paid `GET` handler (all wrappers)

x402 route keys match the HTTP method exactly, and routers (Hono, Express, most route-handler frameworks) answer `HEAD` with the `GET` handler. So `HEAD /api/report` is not a paid route: the handler runs unpaid. No body is delivered, but the handler's work, side effects and response headers are.

**Mitigate:** price `HEAD` too, next to each paid `GET`:

```typescript
routes: { 'GET /api/report': '$0.001', 'HEAD /api/report': '$0.001' }
```

An unpaid `HEAD` then gets a `402` and the handler does not run. The same holds in Next.js middleware, Astro middleware and a Worker in front of an origin: the seller eval confirms an unpaid HEAD gets a 402 once the HEAD route is priced. Alternatively refuse `HEAD` on paid paths before the router reaches the handler. A route key without a method (`'/api/report'`) charges every method, including CORS preflight `OPTIONS`, so avoid that unless the route is not called from browsers. `radius-cli sell check URL --probe-head` warns when an unpaid `HEAD` is served.

### 2. A handler registered before the payment middleware is served free

Express and Hono run handlers in registration order. A paid route defined before `app.use(paymentMiddleware(...))` / `app.use(radiusPayments(...))` answers first, and the middleware never runs.

**Mitigate:** register the payment middleware first; only free routes (health checks) may come before it. `sell check` fails with "the route is served without payment".

### 3. On Hono, a handler's `Cache-Control` replaces the SDK's `private`

`radius-sdk/hono` assigns `c.res`, and Hono's `c.res` setter copies the handler response's headers back over the SDK's response. A paid handler that sets `Cache-Control: public, max-age=60` ships exactly that, so a shared cache can serve the paid response to the next, unpaying, caller. On the other wrappers the SDK adds `private`, but keeps a handler's `public` next to it.

**Mitigate:** do not mark paid responses `public`. If a paid handler sets `Cache-Control`, include `private` yourself (`private, max-age=60`), or set none.

### 4. `settle: 'after'`: a failed settlement withholds the body but not the headers (Hono, Express)

In `'after'` mode the handler runs before settlement. If settlement is then rejected or its outcome is unknown, the body is withheld, but headers the handler set still reach the unpaying client on `radius-sdk/hono` (the same `c.res` merge) and on `@x402/express` (it drops the buffered body, keeps headers already set). The web-standard `radiusPayments()` withholds both.

**Mitigate:** keep the default `settle: 'before'`. If you need `'after'`, never put protected data in response headers.

### 5. Overlapping routes: the first declared key wins

x402 core matches route keys in declaration order. With `'GET /api/*'` declared before `'GET /api/premium/*'`, premium paths are priced at the generic price.

**Mitigate:** declare specific routes before wildcards. Check each price with `sell check URL --price ...`.

### 6. A payment for one URL can unlock another URL with the same offer

The challenge's `resource.url` names the requested URL, but sellers match a payment against the **offer** (scheme, network, asset, amount, recipient), not the URL. A payment quoted for `/api/x` is accepted on `/api/y` when both resolve to the same offer, for example two paths under one wildcard route. Each authorization still settles only once.

**Mitigate:** make every unit of value its own priced route, or bind the offer to the resource with a dynamic `price` or `payTo` (the eval confirms a payment to one creator's `payTo` cannot unlock another's, and a basic-tier price cannot unlock a gold-tier one). Do not rely on `resource.url` alone to separate resources of equal price.

### 7. `network` omitted means Radius mainnet

`radiusPayments({})`, `createRadiusServer({})` and `radiusEnv()` without `RADIUS_NETWORK` all resolve to Radius **mainnet**. A testnet integration that forgets `network: 'testnet'` charges real SBC.

**Mitigate:** always name the network. `sell check` prints it for every offer.

### 8. `settle: 'before'` charges for errors

A paid route whose handler then answers 404, 500 or throws has already settled (the response carries the receipt). See [settlement.md](#settlement-order-receipts-paid-errors-and-replays).

**Mitigate:** validate before charging; record failures with the receipt.

### 9. Decimals and amounts

USD prices are converted with the asset's decimals: SBC and USDC have 6, so `'$0.001'` is `'1000'`. An `asset: { decimals: 18 }` override or an 18-decimal atomic amount produces `1000000000000000` for $0.001, a billion-SBC price no buyer will pay.

**Mitigate:** price in USD strings; run `sell check URL --price '$0.001'`, which names the decimals an amount implies.

### 10. Upstream adapters: x402 only, `/supported` at construction, Next 16.2.6

`@x402/express` / `@x402/next` serve no MPP challenge even when `mpp` is configured, and fetch the facilitator's `/supported` when constructed (their `syncFacilitatorOnStart`), which a runtime forbidding module-scope I/O rejects. `@x402/next` also needs `next >= 16.2.6` (its peer dependency), so Next 15 projects are outside its supported range.

**Mitigate:** use `radiusPayments()` or Hono for MPP and on Workers; on Node the upstream behavior is fine. On Next.js use `radiusPayments()` in `middleware.ts` / `proxy.ts` ([frameworks.md](#framework-wrappers)).

### 11. No seller-side replay cache

Replays are refused by the facilitator and the chain (the authorization nonce), not by the seller. In `'after'` mode a concurrent replay runs the handler twice (one delivery). Key exactly-once side effects by `receipt.transaction`. See [settlement.md](#settlement-order-receipts-paid-errors-and-replays).

### 12. Astro: prerendered pages are not gated, and an unguarded middleware writes the 402 into them

A page with `prerender = true` is built once and served as a static file, so the request-time middleware never gates it: an unpaid request gets the page (`200`, `Cache-Control: public, max-age=0`). Worse, the build renders prerendered pages through the middleware: without a guard, `pay` answers that build-time request with its `402` and the built `dist/client/<page>/index.html` contains `{}` (or `{"error":"facilitator_error",...}` when the facilitator is unreachable). The build still exits 0, and readers get a broken page. Observed on Astro 4.15.12 and 5.18.1 with the Node adapter (`SELL-ASTRO-MW`).

**Mitigate:** `export const prerender = false` on every gated route, and guard the middleware: `if (context.isPrerendered) return next();` on Astro 5, `if (!context.request.headers.get('host')) return next();` on Astro 4 (no `isPrerendered` there). Open the built HTML after the first build. Other adapters (Netlify `edgeMiddleware`, Cloudflare) were not tested.

### 13. Paid 404s: middleware settles before the page renders

Next.js and Astro middleware charge, then let the framework render. A request for a page that does not exist is paid for and answered `404`. In Next middleware `NextResponse.next()` is always a `200` to the SDK, so `settle: 'after'` does not avoid the charge (eval, `SELL-NEXT-MW`). In a Worker in front of an origin the origin's status is visible, so `settle: 'after'` does skip the charge on a `404` and still charges a `200` (`SELL-WORKER-PROXY`).

**Mitigate:** charge only pages you know exist (check the slug before `pay`; an unknown slug then gets a free `404` with no challenge, eval-verified on Next), or use `settle: 'after'` behind a proxy. See [publishers.md](#publishers-charge-agents-keep-humans-free).

### 14. `resource.url` says `localhost` behind a proxy

Self-hosted `next start` builds `req.url` from its own hostname and ignores `Host` and `X-Forwarded-Host` (it applies only `X-Forwarded-Proto`), so `pay(req, ...)` in middleware reports `https://localhost:<port>/...`. Astro 5 ignores both headers unless `security.allowedDomains` names the host (`http://localhost/...`). Payments still settle, but `radius-cli sell check` fails the `resource` check on the deployed URL. Astro 4.15 honoured `X-Forwarded-Host` and `X-Forwarded-Proto` unchanged.

**Mitigate:** on Next, rebuild the request from `x-forwarded-host` (or `host`) and `x-forwarded-proto` before `pay` (`publicRequest` in [frameworks.md](#framework-wrappers); the eval verifies it). On Astro 5, set `security.allowedDomains`. Confirm with `radius-cli sell check` against the public URL. Vercel production `request.url` was not tested.

### 15. CDN headers on the origin response pass through to the payer

On a paid response the SDK appends `private` to `Cache-Control` and leaves every other origin header alone, including `Surrogate-Control`, `CDN-Cache-Control`, `Surrogate-Key` and `Set-Cookie` (`SELL-WORKER-PROXY`: `public, s-maxage=600` became `public, s-maxage=600, private`, and the other three arrived unchanged). Fastly and Cloudflare document those headers as taking precedence over `Cache-Control`, which would let a CDN store a paid page (the CDN behavior itself was not tested). Separately, a CDN that caches the free human HTML can serve it to agents with no gate.

**Mitigate:** gate before the cache, and strip the CDN headers from paid responses in the Worker (the wrapper in [publishers.md](#publishers-charge-agents-keep-humans-free) is eval-verified).

### 16. Fastly Compute: `AbortSignal is not defined`

`@x402/core` calls `AbortSignal.timeout()`; Fastly Compute's runtime (`@fastly/js-compute` 4.0 on Viceroy) had no `AbortSignal`, so a paid route answered `502 facilitator_error: ... AbortSignal is not defined`. A five-line shim fixed it locally ([frameworks.md](#framework-wrappers)). Run by hand only, not by the eval; no production Fastly service was tried. Fastly VCL-only services cannot run the SDK.

### 17. A Node proxy in front of an origin: stream bodies and the origin's headers

Forwarding the incoming body stream, `fetch(upstream, { method, headers, body: req.body })`, throws `TypeError: RequestInit: duplex option is required when sending a body.` on Node 20, 22 and 24 alike (undici; checked on 20.20, 22.22 and 24.22), so every `POST` through the proxy answers 500; forwarding `Keep-Alive`, `Expect: 100-continue` or other hop-by-hop headers throws too. Separately, under `@hono/node-server` a paid route that returns the `fetch()` response as-is fails **after** settlement: the server's `Response` keeps the origin's immutable headers, adding the receipt throws `TypeError: immutable`, and the payer is charged for a 500. Run by hand (x402, `settle: 'before'`, mock facilitator), not by the eval.

**Mitigate:** buffer the body (`await req.arrayBuffer()`, or pass the stream with `duplex: 'half'`), drop hop-by-hop headers, `Expect`, `Content-Length` and `Host`, and return `new Response(res.body, { status: res.status, headers: new Headers(res.headers) })`. The Hono proxy in [frameworks.md](#framework-wrappers) does all three.
